Завещание Джона Локка, приверженца мира, философа и англичанина

В дальнейшем изложении везде будут приводиться переводы фрагментов текстов и даже названий работ, выполненные заново. В принципе, издания классиков в новых переводах должны выпускаться в свет каждые двадцать лет, вместе с развитием исторической науки, и я надеюсь, что и Локк, и другие мыслители XVII в. будут изданы вновь, а их произведения получат новую жизнь на русском языке в новой культурно-исторической ситуации, возникшей после 1991 г.

Одним из таких образцов является работа самого Локка – «Парафраза и примечания к посланиям св. Павла», подготовленная им в последние годы жизни и изданная посмертно в 1706 г.

Дамарис Кедворт, дочь «кембриджского платоника» Ралфа Кедворта, высокообразованная и обладавшая широкими связями женщина, была близким другом Локка, с которым она познакомилась в конце 1681 г. в Лондоне. Начиная с 1691 г. Локк жил в Хай-Лавере, родовом поместье ее мужа сэра Френсиса Машема в Оутсе (графство Эссекс). Леди Машем была предана Локку и относилась к нему как к «отцу и брату». Письма к Локку она подписывала «Филоклея». В свою очередь Локк отзывался о леди Машем как о «в высшей степени одаренной женщине». Машем была автором двух трактатов: «Рассуждение о Божьей любви» («А Discourse concerning the Love of God», 1696) и «Некоторые мысли относительно добродетельной или христианской жизни» («Occasional Thoughts in Reference to a Virtuous or Christian Life», 1705).

Кроме всего прочего, Кинг был автором трактата под названием «Исследование уклада, учения, единства и богослужения в первоначальной церкви, процветавшей в первые триста лет после Христа…» («An Enquiry into the Constitution, Discipline, Unity & Worship of the Primitive Church that flourished within the first Three Hundred Years after Christ…», London, 1691), выход которого в свет сблизил Кинга с Локком. В 1680-х гг. доверенным лицом Локка был тоже его родственник, в 1690-х гг. видный член парламента и один из лидеров вигов Эдвард Кларк.

Перевод термина «conduct» как «управление» не соответствует смыслу этой работы Локка и всего строя его мысли. «Understanding» должно переводиться как «понимание», а не какими-либо другими терминами, вроде «разума» или «разумения». Весь мир переводит этот локковский термин как «понимание», и речь в «Опыте о человеческом понимании» идет именно о понимании в той мере или в тех границах, которые определены человеку. Совершенно непостижимо, каким образом вообще появился перевод «understanding» как «разум». Любой словарь дает в качестве основного значения «понимание».
