).

The prince then lived in Vienna for a time, but his more recent years seemed to have been passed in perpetual and restless travel. But when Flambeau, like the prince himself, had left European celebrity and settled in England, it occurred to him that he might pay a surprise visit to this eminent exile in the Norfolk Broads. Whether he should find the place he had no idea; and, indeed, it was sufficiently small and forgotten.

But, as things fell out (но так случилось; thing – вещь, предмет; обстоятельство, случай; to fall out – случаться), he found it much sooner than he expected (что он нашел его намного раньше, чем ожидал; to find).

They had moored their boat one night under a bank (однажды вечером они причалили: «пришвартовали свою шлюпку» к берегу) veiled in high grasses and short pollarded trees (покрытому высокой травой и низкими подстриженными деревцами; to veil – закрывать вуалью; short – короткий; низкий, невысокий). Sleep, after heavy sculling, had come to them early (после тяжелой работы веслами сон пришел к ним рано; to scull – грести, плыть /на лодке/), and by a corresponding accident they awoke before it was light (и вследствие этого: «по соответствующему случаю» они проснулись засветло; to awake; before – до, раньше; light – свет).

To speak more strictly, they awoke before it was daylight (если сказать точнее, они проснулись перед рассветом; strictly – строго; точно, определенно; daylight – дневной свет; заря, рассвет); for a large lemon moon was only just setting in the forest of high grass above their heads (поскольку огромная луна лимонного /цвета/, только садилась в лес высокой травы у них над головами), and the sky was of a vivid violet-blue, nocturnal but bright (а ночное, но /уже/ светлое небо было яркого сине-фиолетового /цвета/). Both men had simultaneously a reminiscence of childhood (обоим /мужчинам/ одновременно вспомнилось детство; reminiscence – воспоминание), of the elfin and adventurous time (волшебное, полное приключений время; elfin – эльфийский; волшебный, чудесный) when tall weeds close over us like woods (когда высокие травы смыкаются над нами, словно могучие деревья; to close – закрывать; смыкаться; wood = woods – лес; дубрава).

Standing up thus against the large low moon (на фоне огромной заходящей луны; to stand – стоять; вырисовываться; thus – так, таким образом; against – против; на фоне), the daisies really seemed to be giant daisies (маргаритки казались гигантскими маргаритками), the dandelions to be giant dandelions (одуванчики – огромными одуванчиками). Somehow it reminded them of the dado of a nursery wall-paper
