The man brought up the rear (человек замыкал шествие). “My (ух ты)!” he said, “but I’ve got an appetite (ну и аппетит же у меня). I could scoff iron-filings an’ horseshoe nails (я мог бы сожрать железные опилки и гвозди от подковы) an’ thank you kindly, ma’am, for a second helpin’ (и спасибо сердечное, мэм, за добавку = и от добавки бы не отказался; helping – порция).”

“My!" he said, “but I’ve got an appetite. I could scoff iron-filings an’ horseshoe nails an’ thank you kindly, ma’am, for a second helpin’.”

He straightened up (он выпрямился), and, while he reached for matches in the pocket of his overalls (и, пока он добирался до спичек в кармане штанов), his eyes travelled across the pool to the side-hill (его взгляд переместился через заводь = долину на склон холма). His fingers had clutched the match-box (его пальцы ухватили спичечный коробок), but they relaxed their hold and the hand came out empty (но они разжались и рука «вышла» пустой; to relax one’s hold – отпустить: «ослабить свой зажим»). The man wavered perceptibly (человек заметно волновался; to waver – колебаться, быть в нерешительности). He looked at his preparations for cooking and he looked at the hill (он посмотрел на приготовления к еде и посмотрел на склон).

“Guess I’ll take another whack at her (попробую-ка я еще раз; whack – сильный удар; звучный удар; звук от удара; испытание, проба: to have a whack at smth. – попробовать, попытаться сделать что-либо; to guess – полагать, считать),” he concluded, starting to cross the stream (решил он, начав переходить ручей; to conclude – завершить, закончить; сделать вывод, подвести итог; принять решение).

“They ain’t no sense in it, I know (в этом никакого смысла нет, я знаю),” he mumbled apologetically (пробормотал он, оправдываясь; apologetically – принося извинения, извиняющимся тоном; сконфуженно). “But keepin’ grub back an hour ain’t goin’ to hurt none, I reckon (но отложить еду на час вреда не составит: «никому не повредит», я полагаю).”
